It is used as a bio-monitor of air quality. As it is very tolerant to atmospheric pollution, it can be analyzed to detect the substances it contains over long periods, even in urban areas. This is very interesting for studying the accumulation of hazardous materials that cause global warming.

It is also widely used for making natural dyes, particularly for the pink of Scottish kilts.
