Parmelia sulcata

This foliose lichen is used as an environmental biomonitor for its ability to accumulate metals, radioelements and organic pollutants.

It is also found in the manufacture of a dye between pink and purple, depending on the mordant used.

Mordant is a dye fixative, natural or chemical. Mainly iron sulfate, ammonia or alum stone are used.
